Avoiding Red Marks When Using the S320 Smart Sock

The S320 Smart Sock is designed for safe, comfortable monitoring. However, because baby skin is naturally soft and sensitive, some marks may appear where the sock is worn. This article explains why these marks occur and how to prevent them.

Why Skin Marks Can Occur

Baby skin may react to:

  • Wearing the sock too tightly or for long periods
  • A sock size that is too small or too large
  • Moisture from sweat or lotions
  • Dirty socks or detergent residue
  • Frequent movement during sleep
  • Reduced breathability in double-layer fabric areas

These factors can lead to temporary indentations, pressure marks, redness, abrasions, or (rarely) blisters.

Types of Skin Marks

Indentations

Indentations are shallow imprints caused by prolonged gentle pressure.
Common causes include a tight fit, sleeping on the stomach with the foot pressed down, or wearing another sock over the Smart Sock.
These typically disappear within 30 minutes.

Pressure Marks

Pressure marks are similar to the marks adults get from tight socks.
They may occur if the ankle strap is too snug, the Velcro is misaligned, or the sock wrinkles.
Adjusting the fit usually prevents this.

Red Marks

Redness can occur when feet become warm or sweaty during sleep.
This is most common in warm rooms, under heavy blankets, or when moisture becomes trapped under the sensor’s double-layer fabric.

These marks resemble diaper rash and are not caused by heat or electrical activity.

Abrasions or Blisters

Although uncommon, friction from constant movement may irritate the skin.

If this occurs:

  • Switch the Smart Sock to the other foot
  • Do not use the sock on irritated skin
  • Apply petroleum jelly or a barrier cream during the day
  • Wait until the skin fully heals before resuming use

Designed for Comfort and Safety

The Smart Sock is made with soft, breathable, easy-to-clean materials.
Testing with pediatric guidance confirms that skin reactions are related to friction, moisture, or pressure—not burns.
The sock maintains a temperature close to the baby’s skin.

How to Prevent Red Marks

1. Choose the Correct Size

Proper sizing helps ensure comfort and reduces pressure. Make sure the sock fits smoothly and the Velcro aligns correctly.

Sock Size Guide

SizeBaby WeightFoot CircumferenceAnkle Circumference
1< 12 lbs (5.44 kg)72–100 mm (2.9"–3.9")72–100 mm (2.9"–3.9")
1.5< 20 lbs (9 kg)84–124 mm (3.3"–4.8")94–120 mm (3.7"–4.7")
2< 30 lbs (13.6 kg)90–144 mm (3.6"–5.6")100–144 mm (4"–5.6")

2. Keep the Sock and Sensor Clean

Wash the fabric sock and the sensor component every 1–2 weeks.
Separate the sensor fabric and sock bandage before washing.
This helps prevent irritation caused by sweat or detergent buildup.

3. Keep Feet Clean and Dry

Before putting the sock on:

  • Make sure feet are clean and fully dry
  • Avoid lotions or medicated creams
  • Keep room temperature comfortable

Moisture trapped under the sensor can cause irritation.

4. Alternate Feet & Monitor Wear Time

If your baby moves a lot while sleeping, friction may build up on one area.
You can alternate between left and right feet to reduce irritation.
If redness appears, reduce wear time and allow the skin to rest.

5. Use Only on Healthy Skin

If any marks or irritation appear:

  1. Remove the sock from that foot
  2. Apply a barrier cream such as petroleum jelly
  3. Allow the skin to fully heal
  4. Resume use only when the mark is gone
  5. Re-check size and positioning before using again
